Readers of It’s Just Life know of my love of lighthouses. If there is a lighthouse in the area you will find us checking it out. Chris and I have always loved lighthouses and have frequently planned a vacation around locations where we can view several.
Surprisingly with all of our trips to Lakeside on Lake Erie we had never really even looked up the Port Clinton lighthouse but in June we made a day trip to explore a bit and took some time walking around and viewing this cute little structure.
Apparently the lighthouse was moved to this location in 2016 after an extensive restoration which explains why we never saw it. It had been sitting on private property alongside the bank of the Portage River. The owner believed it should be should on the shores of Lake Erie once again so he decided to transfer ownership to the city.
Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy was formed and they took over as owners and began the process to restore the lighthouse. Community efforts and donations made the restoration complete and the rest is history. Just a couple of weeks ago the boathouse that was associated with lighthouse was relocated to the site as well so Chris and I will have to make another trip next year to see that.
The landscape around the lighthouse is a little rocky and allows for vegetation to grow and creep in and out of the crevices which I find pretty beautiful.
Another fun event associated with the lighthouse is the now annual Lighthouse Festival which was held this year on August 4th.
I can imagine that it was a really great day with a lot interesting vendors and historical talks being given. Small communities like Port Clinton have some great little festivals and I am sure this one will be one that brings in a lot of tourists as the years go by.
I love it when communities come together to save a building or something that has historical significance. This lighthouse is a perfect example of that and I applaud Port Clinton for a job well done.

Leave a commentOh, how cute! I love that it was restored and moved to a new location! You know….there’s a lighthouse (Currituck Light) just before you drive onto the beach at Carova TO SEE THE WILD HORSES! Just sayin’…!
One of these days, Dianna….one of these days we will get there. We were just talking about it last week but haven’t figured out when we can come.
I love lighthouses too and really enjoy photographing them. They just always remind me of God’s light guiding us through the darkness and storms of life.
And that is exactly why I like them as well! A visual reminder!
Always cool to see those old restored light houses!
Yes. There is a lot of love that goes into the restorations and that makes them even better.
What a cute little lighthouse. I’m surprised that it’s not very tall. I’ve only seen maybe three lighthouses, the most memorable Split Rock in northern Minnesota.
Oh the Split Rock Lighthouse is a neat one to visit -even on a foggy day like when we were there. I really did like that one a lot.
I too love lighthouses and have found a couple here in Spain that are impressive. There are some great lighthouses along the Washington/Oregon coast. This one is adorable and I was pleased to see it has been restored and given a new home.
We have seen a few on the Washington / Oregon coast and they are all pretty spectacular. I bet the ones in Spain are pretty neat to see as well. I think there are a lot of us that love lighthouses.
I love lighthouses too and this one is super cute. The one I like best in our area is the Jupiter Lighthouse one of the few still functioning on the US East coast. It’s super interesting and you can climb up 105 steps for an amazing view of the inlet and the ocean. I should post some pics on the blog… 🙂
We saw the Jupiter Lighthouse and parked so I could take pictures from a distance but did not go up in it. I would love to be able to do that and yes – you need to put some pictures on the blog!
Chuck and I love lighthouses too. We visit them when ever we can. Love the pictures.
Thanks, Shirley. Lighthouses are certainly a favorite thing to find and there are so many in so many different areas that it is a fun adventure finding them.
Love it! Our kids saw their first lighthouses this summer while we vacationed in Wisconsin.
That is a great thing to introduce the kids to because you can always put those on the list of things to try to find when traveling. They could start a lighthouse book which is what I wish I had done!
We love lighthouses too. We were in Main in 2014 and were repeatedly told by lighthouse tour guides that Michigan had the most lighthouses. I guess we do…and we’ve seen several. But those in Maine sure were beautiful. And this one is too!
I have seen a few of the lighthouses in Michigan but certainly not all of them. Don’t you love the different styles and designs? All so unique but functional.
We really haven’t seen many lifehouses. That event does look like fun!
I have a feeling it will become a bigger festival as time goes on and I love small town festivals like this. You need to add lighthouses to your list of places to visit!
