Sometimes You Just Need to Call an Audible

20 Comments/ 1872/ 1

I have spent my fair share of time sitting in bleachers watching football games over the years.  Micah was a player in junior high and high school and when he attended University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill we became pretty devoted Tar Heel fans and still try to get to a game or two a year.

What I did learn was a football term that can apply to many occasions in regular life as well.  The term is “calling an audible”.  It occurs when the quarterback of a football team scans the formation of the defense of the opposing team and sees something he doesn’t like about it.  At that point he will yell to his own team, and his own team will switch formations to counter the defense.  In other words he switches things up a bit.

Monday I called an audible.  Not a huge one but one that made a huge difference in our day.

We had gotten into Atlanta after a long weekend in Seattle for a company board meeting and spent the night.  Monday we went in search of the elusive gas (and were triumphant, thank goodness) and started the 3 1/2 hour drive home.  Chris drove through the busy part and then I picked up the rest of the trip.

We were almost home and I did it.

I called the audible.

I turned right at Camp Greenville –a YMCA camp in Cleveland, South Carolina.  But it was not the YMCA camp that I was interested in.  It was the Fred W. Symmes Chapel also known as Pretty Place.pretty-placeOn the wall going into the chapel these lovely plaques share a little information and hope for visitors.

pretty-place2We had tried to visit so many times before.  But there are always weddings and events going on and we usually were free on the weekend when it is busy.  But on a Monday it was empty with the exception of some other visitors who would just not get out of my picture as you can tell.pretty-place-10What a beautiful place.  Peaceful and serene.pretty-place-5I can imagine getting married here as many have.pretty-place-3The backdrop of the mountains is amazing

.The walls are covered with plaques and memorials as is the stone wall in front of the cross.pretty-place-9

Thanks, Bernadette. You described it perfectly. I wished we were alone there because it was so inspirational and I could have really spent some time there but there were some less than reverent folks there at the same time so it lost a bit of the feeling. Next time!

What a great decision you made to check out this amazing place. There are times I wish I had turned off the road and checked something out, but didn’t. When it feels right do it! Thanks for sharing these fabulous pictures with us.

Thanks, Darlene. It is breathtaking and so inspirational to be there. We had wanted to stop but there was always a ceremony going on or something so this was the perfect time.

That was an awesome ‘audible’ to call. What a beautiful spot! Peaceful and serene. It would be a lovely place for a wedding. 🙂

Cindy, Yep–one of the best calls I have made lately. Weddings here must be stunning and it is booked often so that is why we have not been able to visit. But finally we did and it was so worth it.

It’s a beautiful place, for sure. Have you also stopped at the Caesar’s Head look-out? Another awe-inspiring place.

We haven’t done that one yet–always on our way someplace and just need to stop there as well. There are so many places that we still have to explore. I think we could live here for 100 years and not see it all.

    As beauty rests
    in the beholder’s eye
    as the bird’s wings flutter
    across the endless sky
    and while rivers flow
    both far and nigh
so lives the word of God
    on high!

Beautiful place. Yeah for audibles! I will have to incorporate more of those into my game plan. I can definitely imagine a beautiful wedding in this place.

Great audible calling! I did the same for us in London, and a tourist free pub crawl was our reward. What a beautiful spot, thanks for sharing.
