I’ve always been fascinated by super-long escalators…in Washington, D.C., they had to construct shelters over some of the ones that initially seemed to go straight up into the sky, for maintenance reasons. If you walk up all the steps of the one on Wheaton Station when it’s not moving, your workout will consist of 190 steps. (And if you stand still while it’s moving, Real Washingtonians will understand, sort of–as long as you stand on the right so they can walk around you. Metrofolks say that standing still on escalators may actually extend the working lives of the machines. Real Washingtonians reply, “Yes, and it’s nice for pickpockets, too,” and keep walking.)

Whoa! An escalator that big has to be in an airport… At least that’s my guess, and I’m sticking to it.

Old Girls in Low Cotton
