Off the beaten track at the end of a gravel road, Chris and I got mugged this weekend. I have wanted to take the under 2 1/2 hour drive to Collettesville, NC for years. If you know me well, you know that I love quirky. I also love collections. The bigger the better. Having gotten rid of most of my massive teapot collection the past couple of months has left me in the mood to maybe admire other collections so Chris gave in to my repeated request to go see The House of Mugs.

Pictures honestly do not do it justice. This place is out there – not someplace you would happen upon unless you were on a specific trip to see it and it was well worth the drive.
According to the information I found online the collection began as many collections do. In 2000 Avery Sisk bought a flea market deal of 750 mugs for $15. Then he had to decide what to do with them and the rest is history. Over two decades, Avery Sisk adorned the cabin with an estimated 30,000 coffee mugs, each with its own story. . What started as a quirky decoration evolved into a sprawling mosaic covering the house, fences and even nearby trees. Visitors from around the world have contributed to the collection, adding their own mugs to any available space. Though Mr. Sisk died in 2023, the family still welcomes guests to explore the property in his memory and share in the charm of this ever-growing display.

They are simply everywhere you look. On tables, on the grill. In trees. On the fences. On the front and the backs of two cabins/trailers. On the ceiling. They are EVERYWHERE!

A few popped out at me during our time there.

Mugs adorned every possible spot and Chris managed to find the perfect spot for the one I brought to share.

Anybody recognize this logo? I left a piece of myself.

There is even a sign. in sheet for folks to register their visit. There were actually 3 people from Winston Salem that were in the area for a wedding and found the place when they were looking for things to do in the area. I anticipated that we would be alone so it was fun to meet other folks who were looking for quirky.

If you ever find yourself in the area you may want to check this place out. It is located in a beautiful area and was just a fun thing to visit. There are even picnic tables set up so you can linger as long as you like. The longer you look the more you are amazed.
Excellent directions can be found here.
Huge thanks to my husband for indulging my whim to take a trip here. This mug is for him.
