I have been working through my book 52 Lists for Happiness and one of the lists that is included is to list things that made me happy as a child. It’s a great exercise to make lists and it is even better to remember childhood memories that made me happy.
Here’s the start of my list which I hope will grow over time.
- My teddy bear Wuzzy. Confidante, snuggler and holder of secrets.
- Birthday celebrations made incredibly special by my mom who went all out to make our days memorable.
- Lighting the candles in the church on Christmas Eve and also having communion at home between services with my Daddy at home with our family.
- Practicing singing in the side yard with my sissy “The Hills Are Alive” from The Sound of Music. (Side note- our ring tones for each other on our iPhones is that exact song.)
- Putting on plays and commercials for family and friends.
- Going to meetings with my daddy and sharing a box of Chicken in a Biscuit crackers.
- Vacations and camping trips.
- All of our cats including the most memorable ones Peek, Tigger, Junior, Pumpernickel, Amaryllis, and Johnathan.
- Church potlucks and time with good church folk who loved me.
- Trips to the library in North Fairfield and time with the librarian Mrs. Chandler.
- Spending time alone at my Grandma and Grandpa’s farm in the summer with no other siblings.
- Jello salad with mandarin oranges.
So how about you? What would make your childhood list of things that made you happy? Share one or two in the comments.

Leave a commentSo enjoyable to read your lists! Love your memories- and you and yiyr sister’s ringtones! Inhave so many happy memories of the first day of vacation at Lakeside each summer- running or biking to the park playground to see if friends from past years were playing, first ice cream cone, first jump in the lake, first night at Hoover Auditorium.
Aw, some of these rang true with me, too. Especially those Chicken in a Biscuit crackers: I remember when those first became available, and how much my grandmother loved them! Who knows how many boxes we devoured. All the activities at church, the kitties who owned me through the years, spending the night with my Grandma. I love that you and your sister have the same ring tone for each other and all the memories that brings to mind.
Such a great thing to do to keep your memories alive and give you a feel good moment. One of my best memories is probably spending time with my grandma and going to work at the train station with her from time to time. She let me punch tickets and sometimes dial the numbers on the rotary phone to call ahead to the next station.
What a great memory!!!!
Definitely my mom’s animal-shaped homemade birthday cakes crafted for us kids on our birthdays. Getting together with the entire extended family for birthday and anniversary celebrations. So many aunts and uncles and cousins… Riding my bike along gravel roads and the prairie sunsets and wild roses thriving in ditches. Vacation Bible School. That’s just a start of many wonderful childhood memories. Thanks for sharing yours.
Lakeside….the memory that kept us together🥰
Yayyyy!
A great list. We also put on plays and commercials for family and friends. Another great memory for me is not only setting up a Kool Aid stand, but also charging people to see our fossil and rock collection.
Oh that is amazing! I would pay to see that!
I love that you took the time to write childhood memories. You reminded me of a church Christmas play many years ago that because of my stuttering I thought I wouldn’t be able to be a part of it. Our choir director put my part to music and I was able to sing it sense stuttering did not affect my singing. I loved that Christmas.
What a wonderful choir director!!!!
Beth Ann, I have no idea why that came out with my husband’s name.
It’s no worries! I knew it was you!
