Summertime

Leave a Comment/ 11/ 0

What are the lyrics to that song from years ago by Ella Fitzgerald?

Summertime and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush little baby, don’t you cry

One of these mornings
You’re gonna rise up singing
Yes you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll take to the sky
But ’til that morning
There ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin’ by. (Ella Fitzgerald 1964)

We are full into summer mode here in the mountains and as I type this the house is waking up slowly to another beautiful morning here in the Western North Carolina mountains. My niece and her husband and my great niece are here for a few days as they are enroute to a dance competition in Florida and it is wonderful to have guests filling up our spaces. That is what summer is about for me. I love to have visitors to share our beautiful area with and whether it is family or friends I am happy to do what I can to make everyone have a great experience.

So what does summer in the mountains look like? Slow mornings. Coffee on either the front deck or back deck.

Survey the plants to see what the deer ate despite my efforts to thwart them. Latest plant munching includes my marigolds which they supposedly don’t like. With babies popping up all over I suspect those mamas are hungry for anything and those bright pops of color caught their eyes.

.

.

Still waiting on the baby birds to fledge in the next in my fern and that can’t come too soon. This was from a few days ago when not all the eggs were hatched. Mana and Daddy sparrow chew me out every time I go out there.

Chase squirrels out of the bird feeder…again.

.

Many days we have a nice gentle rain that helps water the plants and take some of the pollen out of the air and I love to sit on the deck and watch that – book in hand.

But whatever we find to do today I feel like it is truly officially summer. Hot weather is in the forecast for this week and as we take off to go see our new granddaughter I am sure we will be wishing for the cool of the mountains. Hope your week starts off with some time to enjoy the beauty of summertime.
