One of the favorite pastimes in Lakeside, Ohio the past few years has been rock painting. As a kid I loved to climb the rocks along the shore line but those rocks are not what I am talking about. Those rocks are boulders and not very portable.
The rocks that have become the popular kind to paint are the smaller ones that we used to just casually toss into the water. I can not tell you how many rocks I tossed into Lake Erie and yet there were always more the next year all ready to toss into the usually calm lake.
But over the past 10 years or so there has been a great trend of rock painting in Lakeside. There are even classes offered during the summer where kids get the chance to paint rocks any way that they want. What a fun way to express some creativity. When we were doing our Fairy Garden walk one yard in particular had a preponderance of painted rocks. All of the ones in the following pictures came from that one garden.
From candy corn to musical notes to fish there was one in this garden that everyone would love.
Minions, crocs, frogs, pandas and hedgehogs also were featured. Of course Lakeside was prominent.
My favorite collection is below.
I love the ones that feature the shuffleboard courts and the Lakeside Mayfly which are both prominent in Lakeside.
Another fun area in the park area is the area where visitors can visit the Memory Tree.
Of course I chose a red ribbon to add along with my prayer.
If you could leave a ribbon on the memory tree what would it represent? Don’t forget that every comment this month will help support the Connestee Falls Scholarship Fund

Leave a commentThese look like the rocks we painted in 2009 with my parents for Annie’s grave. They still rest on the bottom ledge of Annie’s tombstone, but most are peeled or faded. Maybe we should have used a different type of paint. Thanks for sharing.
What a sweet thing to do. I always think of things like that after the fact, you know? But I love that you had rocks painted for Annie’s grave. That is such a touching memento and that they are still there even if a little faded or peeling. The sentiments still are strong. Thanks for sharing.
That is amazing that there are always more rocks to paint. Maybe the big rocks get together over the winter and have baby rocks. 🙂
I live near the water but we don’t have any rocks big enough to paint. However, people do paint crab shells and oyster shells. Of course, Maryland is for crabs!
This week we had the Buy Boats come and visit. They are very few of them left so it is always fun to get to see them. These boats, some of them over a 100 years old were never built to last more than 10 years. Yet, here they are.
I just love summer. Thank you for sharing part of your summer.

Oh I would love my hand at painting crab shells ! I do have a shell that I bought on Etsy that someone had done a mandalla like painting on that I love. Thank you for sharing all of your great stories with me. It was wonderful to have you stop by!
I envy the artists their talent. The detail and patience have always eluded me.
Your talent is poetry. Without a doubt. I have to admit that I wish I could paint like some of my very talented friends but for now I will focus on my talents that are more evident. 🙂
Some of these are really well done! Love the strawberry and the orange & white fish.
I really should have taken better pics and in different places but this post was kind of an afterthought. Next year!!! Thanks for stopping by!
Wow! Someone at that house is really talented! The rocks are wonderful.
And the memory tree made me tear up. What a great idea. I’d find some old fashioned ribbon, something with a pattern, for my folks.
You always find the coolest little slices of Americana… For this I thank you! 🙂
The painted rocks are wonderful. I have two on my bookshelf, given to me as gifts. I would choose a blue ribbon in memory of my dear brother Tim, we lost 41 years ago when he was only 19 years old.
I love those painted stones. I have had one on my desk for the past year that reads simply HOPE. My great niece painted it as a prize at last year’s family reunion. I love it.
I also like the fabric tie/prayer tree.
Lakeside sounds like my kind of place.
This is terrific! I have been a rock painter and have, really, enjoyed the art! Earthy and sensual!
Painted rock. I have a great deal of appreciation for this genre of folk art.
