River City Sculptures on Parade 2015-16

29 Comments/ 4899/ 1

One of my favorite things about Mason City, Iowa over the past couple of years has been the introduction of River City Sculptures on Parade, Inc.  It is a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to bring public art displays to the city.  They partner with the SculptureOne Network and every year the new sculptures that are brought and installed temporarily at different spots along a 1.6 mile loop get better and better.

One of the great benefits of the program is that each year the sculptures that are loaned to the city for a year are for sale as well as being on display.  The public is invited to vote for their favorite sculpture from June 1 to September 1 and the sculpture that garners the most votes as the People’s Choice is purchased by the city to become a permanent part of the collection.

Before I left Iowa I was able to get a good look at the sculptures and snap some shots to share with you.  Today I will share a few of the ones that I saw on that walk and promise to share more later on here on It’s Just Life.  A few are repeats from previous years that are now on permanent display but I thought I would include them.

Sit back and enjoy and let me know which one of today’s selections is your favorite.  Remember all comments go to Comments for a Cause.

Fish story gets my vote. I like the multi-generation human connection. The Egg man and the turtle are close seconds.

I like the idea of The Box of Dreams. Tweet and Box Turtle are close seconds. It is wonderful that the city does this.

I started thinking…”oh I love ‘school’s out’ and then I saw the next one and the next one and then I realized I loved them all.

This is cool! Philly does something different but similar as they make all business development spend 1% of their budget on outdoor art. Mason City sounds like a fun place. Never been. Been to Rock Rapids and Okoboji and thought that’s enough Iowa, but I’d like to check Mcity out as ya’ll seem to have enjoyed it thoroughly!

They really are trying to make the downtown better in a lot of different ways and these sculptures have really taken off. I love the uniqueness of the ones that are added every year!

I can’t decide between “fish story” and school’s out” as my favorite of this year’s entrants. Amazing detail.

I am no longer in the Mason City area so I will not be writing a post about them since I am not able to see them in person. I am sure one of the other North Iowa Bloggers will be doing a series —check them out at northiowalocal.com. Thanks for stopping by and asking.
