Shopping Local – A Proper Pot

15 Comments/ 3293/ 1

A Proper Pot is no longer in business as the owners retired but it was a wonderful store that was very popular.
The Proper Pot
Shopping local is my mantra these days.  Don’t  get me wrong—I have plenty of boxes from Amazon and other places arriving almost daily at my house but since I am now living in a smaller community with not quite the same shopping experiences I have relied on Amazon a bit.

With that being said I have also really tried to shop local this year as much as possible.  When we were thinking about what we wanted to do for some of the folks who make Chris’s job much easier we decided that a food gift basket was in order so off I went to The Proper Pot located at 36 W Main St., Brevard, North Carolina. (Click on any picture to enlarge.)Proper Pot CollageI had already been in this fabulous store owned by Beth and Larry Canady and knew it was going to be the place I would be spending a lot of time and I was right.  The shop has been open since 1994 and offers a huge variety of products ranging from cookware, wine and barware, gourmet food, gift baskets, and anything a kitchen could possibly need.  There is seriously something new to discover each time and I loved the freedom to browse as along as I wanted. The Proper Pot2Beth and Larry were so gracious and when Larry asked me what I was looking for he took a lot of time “introducing” me to products that might be a good fit in the baskets that I was creating.  They also have gift baskets already prepared and one of those was the perfect gift for another person on our list so I was happy to have that option already taken care of.  The Proper POt 5I love the stories behind some of the items in the store and Larry and Beth choose items to showcase that are full of quality and unique as well which always makes me smile.  There is nothing like a basket filled to the brim with amazingly different items that makes the perfect gift in my opinion.  I definitely was able to fill my shopping list at The Proper Pot.  My only regret is that I did not snap a picture of Larry and Beth but by the time I was ready to go they were busy taking care of customers.  Proper Pot 4Collage

Last year I was living in Iowa and did a lot of local shopping there.  I love the feeling I get when I support a local business and I am building relationships with some of the local shop owners here in Brevard.  It makes a huge difference to me to actually be able to “know” who I am supporting with my purchase and I look forward to shopping locally and finding new businesses to highlight here on It’s Just Life. The Proper Pot 3Make sure you check out The Proper Pot by visiting their website here or their Facebook page here.  They do not have online shopping but you can stop by their store Monday-Saturday: 9:30am-5:30pm.  It would be worth a side trip to Brevard and while you are there let’s have lunch!  basket

Chapel Hill Toffee and Bone Sucking Sauce! Just a couple of the things I’m familiar with I saw in the pics. I enjoy shopping local and even still go to the bank as I want them to think of me as a person not just an account #… Next time you are in the triangle check out Southern Season, you’ll probably enjoy it. Oh yeah and save room for crab cakes and pimento cheese fritters @ the adjoined Weather vane restaurant! Happy shopping!

Cakes, cookies and other food make such delightful gifts in our age of bangle dangle tech stuff and other expensive nonsense.

I love looking through the local shops. i don’t tend to buy much. As the prices in town are high. Compared to places like Walmart or deals I can find online. I will however, indulge in the higher prices if I have the extra funds for a special occasion.

I try to shop local here in Spain as well. I especially frequent the many markets. Some great finds. I love the basket you put together.

I love all the local shops, cafes, antiques and book stores that we have in our small town. We are so small no big chain stores come here because they couldn’t get stinkin rich, so we rely mostly on local business. Which is great because then you find truly unique things. I love the idea of gift baskets! I just did one for a family that were wonderful and gracious hosts to the children of our church. One of the gifts my daughter actually selected the woman had her eye on, but decided it wasn’t within her budget at this time. How fantastic is that!! We picked just the gift her heart desired.

Looks like a cute and fun shop! The other week I went through my local shops in Hampton and I think I came back with more “gifts” for myself than I did others 😉
