Treasures From the Attic

10 Comments/ 74/ 1

Treasures from the attic is a bit of a stretch but it made a better title than Treasures From the Space Over the Garage. Last summer I got together with my siblings at my brother Chris’ house in Ashland, Ohio and we went through some of my mom’s belongings that she no longer had room for when she moved to Memory Lane at Copeland Oaks. I got all the pictures and photo albums and documents and they have been sitting in plastic bins in the apartment space we have above our garage. I have high hopes to get stuff organized but it certainly has not happened yet.

Today I moved over here to give Chris some peace and quiet as he worked and took calls and opened one of the bins up. I found this great little “artifact” from my Grandpa and Grandma Brown’s wedding . It’s a sweet little suede covered book with their marriage ceremony and more in it. One for Life seems like the perfect title since they were married for well over 50 years.

The official marriage certificate.

Good advice.
There is even a chapter on neatness. It hinted at the fact that after marriage couples “let themselves go” and that is not a good thing.

You can imagine I loved looking at this little treasure again. I know I had seen it before we sorted but I had not spent any time looking at it. I am so happy that I have so many great things from the past from my family. It makes my heart happy to look at things that my family saved for over 100 years. Wow. When I typed that it hit me. 100 years of history all packed up in a couple of plastic totes. I need to treasure those. And I do.

Tell me what is something that you have that you treasure. Is is something expensive? Something sentimental? Something that someone gave you or that you found? I would love to hear all about it to make sure you leave a comment. Comment for a Cause – Transylvania Tomorrow is our cause for May 2020. I’m listening.

This is a treasure indeed. I have a few things too. Some I gave to my daughter as I wanted them to stay in Canada. She has mom’s wedding veil from 70 years ago. I also have a very old Bible that is in German so was probably brought over when the great grandparents immigrated over a 100 years ago. It takes time to go through these things but it’s worth it.

I love that you have those and shared them with your daughter. That wedding veil is such a treasure as well as the Bible. I have a Bible somewhere in those bins as well but I can’t remember whose it was.

I have inherited 3 pieces that are now treasures.
One is the clock that kept the time for our family. My brother was the keeper and recently had it brought back to life. It is a complicated process to find old timers that can still work on these pieces. If there is one in your family, take time soon to have it repaired.

We never had a family clock that I know of but what a treasure that is for you. I imagine that is a lost art and your brother was smart to find someone to work on it. Remember when grandfather clocks were a big thing? I don’t think they are quite so much anymore. Thanks for sharing your treasure!

It’s amazing that you still have so many treasures from the past that are part of your family. We don’t have much but the few things we do have, I cherish.

What treasures, indeed. I treasure the collection of notebooks which my mom filled with daily entries beginning in high school. They are documentation of daily life, of weather and such, not of thoughts. But I treasure them, her life in her handwriting.

I can’t even express how sweet this is. What a lovely treasure you have there. It reminds me that I have a storage bin to also go through of items that were from my grandparents (married in 1900) and my parents. We have lots of sentimental treasures from both my family and my husband’s that I hope someone decides to keep after we’re gone. I’ve actually started making a list of them so our grown up kids know what they are and who they once belonged to.

What a treasure to have your grandparents wedding day memories. I know what you are saying when you said it makes you feel happy. Looking at my families pictures make me feel that way. I have several family things I treasure. The most recent is a box that my Great Grandfather ( Mother;s side) gave all three of his daughters. Simple stained wood box with gold himges and velvet lined so pretty. The one I was given belonged to one of my Great Aunts, To further the treasure it has some of her jewelry in it. Such a blessed treasure.

Ironically I am going through some boxes in my office today to throw away clutter and paper. I am being semi-successful. It’s a beginning. We have come across some photos and papers that bring back memories, some happy and some sad.
The treasure you found is sweet especially so because you cherish it. – David

What a treasure you’ve uncovered!! You know, back in “the day,” people used to be awfully good at saving things. In our digital world, everything is online, in the cloud, on Facebook, etc. I wonder if our great-great-grand kids will find our treasures as interesting as you’ve discovered this one to be??
